Relevant Qualifications for Aerial installers

The days have long gone when anyone could climb onto a roof or into a loft space and install an aerial to receive television and radio signals. Although it is possible to do so – and many householders and amateur electricians do just that – nowadays it is more likely that the installer is a trained expert and hold qualifications and training certificates in his field of expertise.

Recognised Body

There is now a recognised body for aerial installers that give the industry more credence and also trains and act as one voice within the electrical business. The Confederation of Aerial Installers Ltd (CAI) is now a recognised body and is where those interested in hiring the services of an aerial installer should look when either needing an engineer for one job or to hire them for contractual work.

Radio and Television Qualifications

It is possible to obtain qualifications within the CAI that will give aerial installers a certificate in basic radio and television installation techniques. This is the most basic of courses and will lead the learner on to further study and NVQ levels. The City and Guilds association has also introduced the Digital Television Aerial Installation (2218) which will update the aerial installer’s qualifications so that they are conversant with the digital switchover.

Satellite

These days’ aerial installers also have to have knowledge of satellite installations and the CAI also has courses in satellite and also motorised systems. These skills will give aerial installers further qualifications if they wish to be hired by larger companies specialising in aerials and satellite systems or will be another skill if they wish to set up their own business at a later date.

Health and Safety

Qualifications in health and safety are a must for aerial installers who are often working in dangerous situations. Not only will a qualification show they have relevant training but will bring home to the workforce the latest aspects of safety within their industry.

Trainees and Apprenticeships

For young people just out of school or college with the wish to join the electrical and electronics trades the CAI are also starting an apprenticeship scheme for member companies.

They will work with employees and colleges to form a training scheme that encompasses all the aerial industry.

Booklets and information

The CAI can also supply members with booklets and other information that will keep the members employees up to date with the latest technology. Members of the public can also contact them for information about digital switch over and other aerial problems. They can also find a trained aerial installer in their area that has the right qualifications.

Self Employed Aerial Installers

Many aerial installers are self employed and as such need to keep in touch with developments within their industry and update their training where necessary. There have been big changes in recent years and for self employed aerial installers to keep up with developments they need to be part of their industries governing body.

Business

If you run an electrical business and require the services of aerial installers make sure they have qualifications and are part of their governing body. By being a member of the CAI the aerial installers will not only have undertaken training and hold relevant qualifications but they will be aware of the right materials to use for the required job.
